Machine Learning is useful in pattern recognition. It's part of the emerging industry of business intelligence. Business intelligence helps a user to see that one piece of information can be significantly more important than another piece of information. This is a different concept than the concept of "the more information you have the better off you are".
Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) plays a part in business intelligence, as well, so I include a link or two on this technology here. OLAP can allow the end-users to drill down for patterns in data.
Data warehouses and data marts take advantage of these technologies. I'll have more discussions on this subjects later. Meanwhile, here are some sites to check it out. More info later.
